Preliminary Project of the Social Security Center in Motril (Granada) 2008

The new Integrated Social Security Office in Motril is located in the southern sector of the municipality, within an area of urban expansion associated with the agricultural plain and the Southern Ring Roads. Its corner position enables the creation of a visible, transparent, and representative institutional building, capable of structuring the urban frontage and establishing a direct relationship with the public realm.

The proposal responds to the planning requirements of the municipal master plan through a rational occupation of the site. The building volume frees an interior strip functioning as an English courtyard, bringing natural light to the basement level, accommodating the vehicle ramp, and introducing vegetation along the inner boundaries. The building is developed over a ground floor plus three upper levels, leaving capacity for future expansion.

Natural light constitutes the principal architectural argument of the project. The glazed façade, modulated through opaque panels and horizontal lines, allows daylight to illuminate the workspaces while projecting a light and technological image. Inside, a central skylit courtyard operates as an impluvium of light, visually organizing the building and generating waiting and service areas that are more spacious, clear, and comfortable.

Circulation is organized in a simple and accessible manner. The main entrance is located at ground-floor level, linked to reception, administration, and initial public service functions. From this point, users access an open central space connected to the vertical circulation cores and the different functional areas. The upper floors accommodate administrative, staff, and public service uses, while the basement concentrates parking, archives, technical installations, and storage areas.

From a constructive perspective, the building is conceived as a unified and efficient volume, resolved through a lightweight, modular façade system with a rational construction process. The repetition of elements, structural clarity, and spatial flexibility optimize construction costs and facilitate future functional adaptations without compromising architectural quality.

Overall, the Integrated Social Security Office in Motril proposes a contemporary, luminous, and functional institutional architecture. The project combines transparency, clarity of circulation, constructive rationality, and responsiveness to the urban context to deliver a building that is efficient, accessible, and recognizable in the service of the citizen.
