  • The building, a benchmark in innovation, sustainability and workplace transformation, and headquarters of the Almería Science and Technology Park, has been presented as a leading example of architecture applied to contemporary work environments.

The PITÁGORAS building, headquarters of the Almería Science and Technology Park —PITA—, has welcomed a professional visit from the Spanish Office Association (AEO), during a technical session in which the building was presented as a distinguished example of innovation, sustainability, and the transformation of workspaces within the office building sector.

The visit was led by José Ángel Ferrer, director of Ferrer Arquitectos, the architectural practice responsible for the design of the PITÁGORAS and TECNOVA complex. Both buildings were commissioned in 2009 following the award of a national architectural competition and completed in 2012. Since then, they have become a significant architectural reference linked to business and technological innovation in the province of Almería.

During the tour, participants explored the building’s key architectural concepts, conceived to respond to the needs of an advanced, flexible, and knowledge-driven working environment. PITÁGORAS is organized around a central gallery functioning as the main axis of internal circulation, encouraging natural daylight penetration, visual connectivity between spaces, and the creation of areas for interaction, collaboration, and professional activity.

The event brought together representatives from architectural firms, professional consultancies, and companies specializing in office-building solutions from across Spain, who were able to experience first-hand the design strategies implemented in the building: energy efficiency, spatial versatility, integration of vegetation, interior courtyards, natural lighting, and constructive solutions specifically adapted to the local climate and context.

One of the most distinctive features of the complex is its façade, designed through a system of Blanco Macael marble louvers, which provide solar protection while giving the building a strong material identity. This solution combines technical innovation, environmental performance, and the contemporary use of a material deeply connected to the territory of Almería.

It is worth highlighting that the PITÁGORAS building was designed according to sustainability criteria aimed at achieving BREEAM certification, in line with Ferrer Arquitectos’ long-standing commitment to environmentally responsible architecture. This approach is reflected in the firm’s certification under ISO 14001 Environmental Management and ISO 9001 Quality Management standards in 2007, making the practice a pioneer in Andalusia and among the first in Spain to obtain both certifications.

The visit also served to highlight the role of the Almería Science and Technology Park as a strategic environment for business development, innovation, and knowledge transfer. Alejandra Carreño Morales, Managing Director of PITA, introduced attendees to the park’s functions, services, and strategic role as a platform for technology companies, R&D&I initiatives, and businesses particularly linked to sectors such as agrotechnology, sustainability, and emerging productive solutions.

The Spanish Office Association brings together professionals, companies, and institutions connected to the office and workplace real estate industry in Spain, acting as a platform for analysis, discussion, and knowledge-sharing on the evolution of the sector. Its visit to the PITÁGORAS building reinforces the interest in this project as a case study addressing the current challenges of workplace design: sustainability, wellbeing, flexibility, efficiency, and adaptability to new ways of working.

For Ferrer Arquitectos, this visit represents a recognition of the value of architecture capable of anticipating the evolving needs of organizations and transforming office buildings into more human, efficient, and representative environments. More than a decade after its completion, the PITÁGORAS–TECNOVA complex remains a paradigmatic example in the design of contemporary workspaces.
