Preliminary Project for the Rehabilitation of CEIP San Fernando in Adra (Almería) 2010

The scope of the intervention is located at the southern end of the CEIP San Fernando school complex, within the school grounds, at the corner of Asturias and Tarrasa streets.

The project, conceived as a replacement for the existing gymnasium, organizes its access from the playground at ground-floor level. The first floor, dedicated to classrooms, is connected through an exterior staircase and an accessible ramp linked to the existing building, ensuring both functional continuity and full accessibility throughout the complex.

Natural light is introduced through continuous horizontal openings and filtered courtyards, generating uniform illumination while avoiding direct solar exposure. The lattice screens and façade planes operate as passive solar-control systems, improving interior comfort and energy efficiency.

The spatial organization is articulated through clear and hierarchized circulation routes, highlighted by an elevated walkway that connects different levels and structures the ensemble. The circulation combines functionality with spatial experience, incorporating views toward courtyards and shared areas that facilitate orientation.

The constructive solution is sober and robust, combining rendered walls, ceramic masonry, and lightweight metal elements. The project prioritizes durability, low maintenance, and constructive simplicity, with precise and carefully controlled detailing.

The building integrates into a consolidated residential environment through a clear volumetric composition and a unified architectural language. Its continuous façade provides an institutional identity, while the exterior space acts as a transitional threshold between the school and the city.
