1st Prize in Competition
The project is located in one of the most important and central plot areas of the city of Almería, which occupied the former Ismael Moratón Sports Complex. The intervention preserves the 25m indoor pool building constructed for the Mediterranean Games and demolishes the rest of the pre-existing buildings. On the corner of Avenida del Cabo de Gata and Angel Jover Street, an “L” shaped two-story building is designed for the Sports Center and other commercial uses that complete an interesting offer of services for the citizen. The roofs are occupied by a series of sports courts for paddle tennis and other sports. This “L” shaped building provides access to the entire complex, which is accessed under the cantilevered section on the corner that marks the building entrance and creates a double-height lobby where the reception is located. The facades are designed to seek cross views of the sea and city landmarks like the Cargadero de Mineral, offering the necessary solar and thermal protection. They are structured as a white concrete shell of variable size according to the requirements for light, views, acoustic protection of the neighboring buildings, etc. The intervention is completed with another commercial and service building facing the Paseo Marítimo Avenue and with the retractable covering of the pre-existing Olympic pool, allowing its use at any time of year.
