Conference on Sustainable Architecture

Conference on Sustainable Architecture

On March 26, a conference on Sustainable Architecture and Construction was held at the ASEMPAL headquarters in Almería, led by our Director, José Ángel Ferrer. The conference addressed issues such as What is Sustainable Construction?, What is it for?, How much does it cost?, Is it profitable for a developer?, Is it profitable for the user?, How is it accredited?, What is the short and medium-term future? In addition, Ferrer accompanied the talk with concrete examples of architectural designs carried out in our studio following sustainability criteria, such as the PITA building.

PMVS Almería Conference

PMVS Almería Conference

On Thursday, January 22, 2015, the presentation of the Progress Report of the Municipal Housing and Land Plan (PMVS) of Almería was held at the ASEMPAL headquarters. The speakers were: Blanca Marín Valiño (Head of the Housing Service of the Regional Government of Andalusia in Almería), José Mª López Cerezo (Director of the Municipal Housing Institute of Málaga), Pedro Gómez Calvache (Director of the municipal housing company “Almería XXI”), and our colleagues Antonio Palenzuela (architect in charge of the Plan at Ferrer Arquitectos) and José Ángel Ferrer (Architect and Director of Ferrer Arquitectos) as moderator.

After the presentation of the Plan and a brief presentation by the speakers, an interesting and lengthy discussion began between the speakers and the audience, which filled the ASEMPAL room.

Among the conclusions of the Conference, it is worth noting the importance of encouraging the construction of subsidized housing by the administration. Likewise, emphasis was placed on the importance of new homes meeting the real demands, both rational and emotional, of today’s society through an adequate design that excites and makes the use of homes effective and attractive to their users, using, among others, sustainability criteria in the broadest sense of the word (environmental comfort, air quality, energy saving, etc.). The Plan foresees the creation of an ordinance in that regard. The vision provided by José Mª López Cerezo, comparing the PMVS of Almería with that of Málaga in a clear and enjoyable way, was also of special interest.

Ferrer Arquitectos, as part of its commitment as a socially responsible company, incorporated sign language interpreters into the conference to assist attendees with hearing impairments.

Finally, after the interest aroused by the attending public, the City Council pledged to extend the deadline for suggestions, to further enrich the document currently on public display.

Sustainability Conference at PITA

Last November 26th, a conference on sustainable architecture was held at the headquarters of PITA (Almería Science-Technology Park) with the collaboration of the College of Architects and the attendance as speakers, among others, of: Oscar Martínez (Director of BREEAM Spain), José Ángel Ferrer (Architect and Main Partner of Ferrer Arquitectos) and Pedro Seguí (Architect and Head of Sustainability of Ferrer Arquitectos).

The conference dealt with the different organizations that certify sustainability in buildings, such as BREEAM, where Ferrer Arquitectos is part of its Advisory Council in Spain, and LEED.

Oscar Martínez spoke about the characteristics of BREEAM, the building sustainability certification organization with the highest number of certified buildings in the world.

José Ángel Ferrer spoke about the importance of incorporating sustainability criteria in projects to obtain more efficient and comfortable buildings for their users, using as an example the headquarters of PITA and TECNOVA. He emphasized that sustainability is inherent to good architecture from its origins and that the novelty today is that sustainability can be certified with organizations such as BREEAM or LEED.

Pedro Seguí spoke about the importance that Ferrer Arquitectos gives to sustainability with the creation of a specific area, for which he is responsible, within the company and about some details of the process for obtaining sustainable certification from BREEAM or LEED in buildings.
